Situated at the edge of the Bann Estuary in County Londonderry, this quaint abandoned cottage was built around 1600, by fishermen who trawled the waters for the salmon who travel up the Bann.
The fish were caught in the open sea using nets which were then hauled ashore using the (now-rusty) winches, which are still in place.

The cottage is accessible to the public along the coastal path from Portstewart, (rocky, and with multiple steps, leave Portstewart on the western side of the promenade towards the convent). For the lazy like me, and those less able, drive along the Strand Road, and turn right into Berne Road, and you can park on the road, at the cottage. There’s a tourist information display, with some historical information.

And if the sea air makes you hungry, there’s a cafe a couple of hundred yards away, the ‘Lost and Found.’
Pay it a visit!
