Ardglass in a Jamjar!
Why is Ardglass in a Jamjar? I’ve no idea! But I’ve heard that expression used by my late grandparents, back in the 1960’s. It was made famous by Van Morrison, the singer/sngwriter, who immortalised it in his song ‘Coney Island.’
…On and on, over the hill to Ardglass
Van Morrison
In the jam jar, autumn sunshine, magnificent
And all shining through Stop off at Ardglass for a couple of jars of
Mussels and some potted herrings in case
We get famished before dinner…

Ardglass lies on the Co.Down coast, between Strangford and Killough, – to the east of Downpatrick, and thus part of the picturesque Lecale District. Ardglass is best known locally for its fishing fleet, and the cry, “Ardglass Herr’ns” is a boyhood memory, – a man pushing a handcart, selling fresh fish in the streets of Belfast.

Back in the 19th Century, the village was a spa resort and one William Ogilvie had a bathing house built so that those taking the waters could change in modesty and privacy. The structure was almost crumbling, until in 2014 a grant allowed some restoration with the help of The Follies Trust. Click the image for a link to read more.

The sea birds are friendly – although be careful about the local shops! Janette went into a shop for two small bottles of Diet Coke and the man tried to charge her £6! only when she protested did he guess at £3!

Hi. Is Jamjar not slang for car? Cheers
