We have photographed a lot of kids over the years and we like to think that we do it rather well. One of the things we’ve have learned is how to make kids feel chilled.
Every age is different and every youngster is different. Some will come bursting in looking forward to it all. Others might be a little more quiet and need some coaxing.

We will meet them at their level, chatting with them about what they like, what they have been doing and general getting them comfortable.
If it means playing about and acting the idiot we can do that. If it means taking everything a little slower and quieter then we can do that too.
For the first chunk of the experience we will typically be photographing you and the kids together. This aids them feel comfortable and understand the procedure. They still have their Mum or Dad for moral support.
Pretty soon they will be happy and chilled and up for the full photoshoot.
We know it’s working because so many youngsters remember us when they come back for their next shoot?

Wedding Photography is always changing. When we shot weddings with medium format film, the photographer would spend a couple of hours with the couple, would capture the essence of their day, – the groom and his friends outside the venue, the arrival of the bridal party, some shots during the service, the signing of the register, the family groups and posed bridal shots, and a ‘pretend’ cutting of the cake.
The advent of quality digital photography at the turn of the century changed all that, and ‘reportage’ was born. The photographer would spend all day with the couple, sometimes with a second-shooter, would look for informal interesting shots, capturing the happiness in a story-telling album that would evoke memories of the day from beginning to end.
But wait! The continual development of photography and camera devices, the increasing quality that can now be obtained with smartphones has changed the situation yet again. In this day and age, its become second nature to lift your phone and make a photographic record of life, – and that certainly happens at weddings. With all the guests happily snapping away, recoding your big day, and making hundreds of images, the professional photographer can now go back to what he or she was doing before. Artistic posing, proper exposures in high quality images, working for the key images of the day, perhaps just for two and a half hours or so.
So, here’s my brand new Wedding Offer…

NO! Not a coffee shop. Bertie the Bear is one of our studio props and he’s really popular with kids. They love his soft fleecy hair and his cheeky grin, and he’s just the right size for a big cuddle from any of our toddlers. And of course he keeps me company when I’m working alone at the studio.

But what Bertie really likes is to be with lots of lovely people, so book a studio appointment for just £45, (presently that includes a complimentary framed Art Print in a 10×8 inch frame), and make Bertie’s day!

On a warm sunny winter day in December, Janette and I visited Dundrum Castle, and took a wee walk around the town. I took with me my ‘twins’ – the two Nikon D610 dSLRs one with a 24-120mm f/4 lens, and the other with a 80-210 f/2.8 lens. Before I started I metered the ambient light at f/14 @ 1/100 th sec on ISO100. Because the day was so bright and sunny, the 24-120 lens was fitted with a circular polarising filter which reduced light by around 2 stops
Here’s some of the images.
We started at the ‘Belfast Road’ side of the town, parked in the small car park and wandered along the street. Continue reading Photo-Essay: Dundrum, Co. Down
Children of a certain age can suddenly lose the power to grin without looking like some weird gargoyle off a church! (In fact some parents do too!) The tip to getting a genuine grin is to give them something they really giggle at.
Here are some things you can do:-
We like to keep things fun and simple with youngsters. We understand they trade moods from moment to moment. We will treat them with respect and generally mess around with them to help everyone get the final photograph.

Funniest and most original answers will get posted on the blog and the winner gets a free Photoshoot Gift Voucher for our £45 Winter Studio Deal! The answer with the most FB likes wins. Competition ends on 30 Jan 2017. Winner notified within 5 days thereafter.
