Old Doors

On Wednesday 27th October (It’s 2023) the good citizens of Norn Iron were introduced to Big Aggie, or, more formally, Storm Agnes, the remnants of a gale blowing across the Atlantic, or somewhere! We were, apparently, spared the worst of it; that privilege was granted, so they say, to the people of the south west of England, but we did have lashing rain and some wind. Anyway, I was in Comber that day, with the Fujifilm X-T30 resting in the car seat beside me, and I had the photo-itch. (You know that urge you get to make a photo of something – anything…) but there was no way I was getting out of the car in THAT rain.

So, I was looking something, something that would appeal to me as an image, that I could shoot from the comfort of the driver’s seat! (Yes, I know, a total lack of dedication.. A REAL photographer would stand in the rain, la de da de da…)

I was to meet someone in Killinchy Street, – and I just happened to park opposite this…

I lifted the camera, and – there it is! My photo-itch was scratched! Later, on Flickr, the image was elevated to ‘explore’ status, – something I was really chuffed about!

Comber Spuds

Janette brought these freshly-dug new Comber potatoes home today.  This morning they were in the ground.  Tomorrow, they will be boiled, (Over here, we don’t peel these potatoes, we just scrub them and boil them in their skins – when ready the skins will almost fall off them) salted and served with lashing of butter.  The Comber potato is a waxy, flavoursome food, and a protected brand.

I photographed them in the Studio-Pod, under two Elinchrom D-Lites, with the Fujifilm X-T2, and Nikkor 50mm MF lens, against a green chromakey background.  F=50mm, f/5.6 @ 1/125th sec on ISO400.

Comber Cabbage Crop…

Some time ago I made images of a field of barley at Comber, and I uploaded two of them to Pixabay, the photo-sharing website.

They’ve been downloaded 91 times, so far, – which is quite nice.  But just down the road from the now-harvested barley field, there are acres upon acres of cabbages, and since I now consider myself an expert vegetable – (photographer!) – I couldn’t resist stopping to get a few photos.  Of cabbages…  Er, yes.  Cabbages.

A Walk in Comber…

Photography should never just be a profession or occupation.  It should be a passion – for when the photographer loses the passion for image-making, just for the sheer joy of making an image, it is time to put the camera on eBay.

There is great satisfaction in going to a town or village or landmark or area, and just making images for no other reason than to make images!  When I indulge my passion for photography, I like to use film, to shoot with my Nikon F100, and to shoot in Black and White.  I like to develop those images in chemicals myself, at home, at the kitchen sink, using methods I learned many years ago.

Last week, I took a walk through Comber, our nearest town, just 5 minutes  from Ballygowan, and shot a couple of rolls of film. Continue reading #Comber, Co.Down
