A visit to the cafe at Dundonald Old Mill is an opportunity to make an image of the historic mill waterwheel at the building. I photographed it from several angles, using the Nikon F100, and a role of Ilford Delta ISO100. Here’s one of the resulting images…

Photography should never just be a profession or occupation. It should be a passion – for when the photographer loses the passion for image-making, just for the sheer joy of making an image, it is time to put the camera on eBay.
There is great satisfaction in going to a town or village or landmark or area, and just making images for no other reason than to make images! When I indulge my passion for photography, I like to use film, to shoot with my Nikon F100, and to shoot in Black and White. I like to develop those images in chemicals myself, at home, at the kitchen sink, using methods I learned many years ago.

Driving in the lovely Autumn sunshine today, near Purdysburn, outside Belfast, I came across this old, isolated gatepost, just begging to be photographed! Observe the texture in the old post, and the background and foreground interest in the image, giving it a sense of depth and distance.
My visit to Newcastle, Co. Down last week produced a vintage image – a child on a little miniature pony, being gently led along the beach by the pony owner and the child’s mother – a very traditional sea-side scene.
It reminded me of another Pony on the Beach image I made around 5 years ago, when we lived at Millisle, and the beach was just across the road from our living room. It was a grainy Black and White image of a traditional ‘trotting pony’ being exercised on the sand, shot on the Nikon F100, on Ilford ISO1600 film. I looked out the negative and scanned it at 300 DPI, and here’s the result, after just a tweak or two in Photo-shop:-
I haven’t a clue who the person in the image is!
Here’s my (prize-winning) shot of the Belfast-Dublin enterprise express, drawing into Newry station, one August evening in 2011. Taken as the train was still moving, Nikon D700 camera on a tripod.
