Poyntzpass NIR Halt

Poyntzpass is a small village sitting on the border between Co.Armagh and Co.Down, Northern Ireland. More importantly, it straddles two lines of transport, the old Newry Canal, now defunct, and the main Northern Ireland Railways line between Belfast and Dublin. A level crossing unites the two parts of the village, and there is a small unmanned station.

But it was the historic signal box, now out of use of course, which attracted my attention as I drove through the village. I couldn’t resist stopping for a couple of quick shots – time was pressing, so it was literally, just a few minutes…

Slaght Crossing

Old Trackside Railway Hut

Around 2.30pm this afternoon, I was about to cross the Slaght Level Crossing, outside Ballymema, when this old trackside hut caught my eye, and I thought, “Ah ha! There’s an old trackside hut! Time to get the camera out.” I parked the car, and walked to a gate with a view of the track, and fitted a medium length zoom on the Fujifilm X-T4. (No, I wasn’t trespassing on the tracks.)

I needed the faster shutter speed to steady the lens in the wind, – I should really have got the monopod out, lowered the shutter speed to 1/60th and the ISO to 400.

But then hindsight’s a wonderful thing!

Actually, a few days down the track (see what I did there) and I decided to take away that ugly sign in Photoshp. It probably improves the image significantly!

Moving Experiences in Belfast!

A Passenger’s Perspective…

I like the city’s skyline, and I’m ashamed at how many time I admire it from the comfort of a car!  Today however, due to a convergence of coincidences, I happened to be in the front passenger seat of a car, with a camera in my hand, – so I wound down the window and took a few shots.  Not easy, for there were quite a few other vehicles on the road at the same time. Moira Railway Station

Moira, historically in the County of Down, is served by NIR (Northern Ireland Railways), via a station around 1 mile outside the town, and actually situated in Co Antrim.  The line is the Belfast to Portadown line, and Moira lies between Lisburn and Lurgan.

The station boasts a rather fine (although now disused) signal box and is the oldest station still in use on the NIR network, opened on 18 November 1841.  Its hard to believer now that just as recently as 1945 the station was manned by a staff of 15 men, including the stationmaster, porters, signalmen etc.  Now no-one works here at all.
