Baby Callen

It’s a cold snowy day here – so full marks to baby Callen’s mum and dad for venturing out in the bad weather to come to Dundonald and visit the studio.  We were rewarded with lots of lovely pictures and smiles, and a happy little boy who thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Callen

But when you ask Callen to sit up and smile for the camera, don’t be surprised if he makes himself comfortable and waves his feet in the air – just for fun!

New Year – New Gear #2

I’m still playing with the new Fufifilm X-T2, so today I took it on a walk around Kiltonga Nature Reserve in Newtownards, to test out the film simulation feature.  One of the interesting features of this camera is the ability to set it to emulate various Fufi Films, like Fuji’s popular Velvia colour film for example.

ACROS spool and box

The camera has a black and white option to record images on virtual ‘Acros’ monochrome film, which should give outstanding contrast, and a rich tonal range.  Furthermore, Acros simulation will produce grain in the image exactly the same size as the film version, by ISO.  The claim made by Fuji is that Arcos film simlation is even better than shooting in RAW and later converting to monochrome in Photoshop.  Fufi even claim that Acros will outperform any other high end digital camera shooting in B&W mode.  So, today I set the X-T2 to shoot in Acros Monochrome on card two, and in RAW on card one.  (Shooting in RAW, of course means that should I want a colour image, I can use the RAW unprocessed files to produce it.)

New Year, New Gear!

It is 2018, and work has begun again after the Christmas break.  2017 was a whirlwind year, with studio appointments peaking to 50 portrait sessions and 10 commercial sessions in November. My New Year Resolution is to slow down, take life a lot easier, and get out into the streets more with a camera.

And there’s the point.  After Christmas I decided to invest in a new camera, and logically it should have been a Nikon D850, after all, I’ve been shooting with Nikons for around 30 years, my lens system is all Nikon, and the D850 is getting rave reviews.

But wandering around the streets with a huge Nikon DSLR,  and a lens to match, = it’s hardly unintrusive.  Some of my wedding photographer friends have been turning to mirrorless cameras.  I was sceptical at first, but I decided that before I’d buy my new Nikon I’d weigh up the pros and cons of buying a Fujifilm X-T2:  Continue reading New Year, New Gear!

How long will it take?

I’m often asked by parents, ‘How long will my family photo session last?’ So here’s a handy guide to how much time to plan for your child’s session.

At Portraits2Go.co.uk you can pick between different shoot types.

Mini Session: 25 minutes. This session is fantastic if you simply want 2 or 3 images to record your offspring growing up. These work particularly well for older children who can follow directions easily. We craft some variations in the poses but we don’t change venues or outfits.

Standard Session: 60 minutes. Our most popular session by far is wonderful for younger children. The extra time also lets us capture some more creative photographs. We will shoot on various backgrounds. You will have at least one change of clothing as well. For younger children it lets them warm up and calm down.

Super Session: 120 minutes. For groups of three or more kids this gives every child plenty of time to be involved and photographed without them getting bored in between. We will be able to shoot them in groups and individually. We can have lots of poses and creative photographs too. You can usually manage several outfit changes if you wish.
